Secrets of Salt The salt book

Laundry and stains : Page 1

Keeping all of your laundry, linens, carpet, rugs, and wearables clean and stain free is an important part of saving money in your household budget. Make it a habit to use salt in your everyday laundry and cleaning to keep your home items fresh and stain free.  Keep in mind that salt is very inexpensive and you can use salt to clean in a variety of ways throughout your home.

Irons
Does your iron stick to your ironing when you use starch for a crisp iron look?  Using a pinch of salt in your laundry starch will keep the hot iron from sticking to your laundry. Salt also gives your cottons a glossy, like new look and feel after ironing.

Perspiration stains
If it has been a long hot day and your shirts have perspiration stains on them or if they have a ring around the collar, you can remove these stains by soaking the item in saltwater before adding to the laundry.  If the stain is double stubborn, you can make a paste of salt, baking soda, and water and rub on the stained area to work it out.

Mildew
Sometimes a wet towel or wet clothes can grow mildew on them.  To get mildew out of your white fabrics make a paste of lemon juice and salt and work into the mildew spot. Let this stand for a couple of hours in the sun before laundering as usual.

Grease stains
When you are cooking or eating and you get grease on your clothes, you should put salt on the effected area right away to prevent staining. The salt will absorb the grease. You can also use this method when a grease spill gets on your favorite tablecloth during dinner.

Wine stains
Wine is a favorite when dining and for the holidays.  If wine is spilled on a tablecloth or rug, you should blot up as much as possible and then immediately cover the wine with table salt. The salt will absorb the remaining wine. Later when you have more time, or the guests have left you can rinse the tablecloth with cold water; or you can scrape up the salt from the rug and then vacuum the spot.

Too many bubbles?
Are you using too much detergent in the sink or in the laundry that creates too many bubbles?  You can sprinkle salt on the bubbles, lightly to reduce the amount of suds being made.
